12 Welsbach, Baron Carl Auer von
[br]b. 1 September 1858 Vienna, Austriad. 4 August 1929 Treibach, Austria[br]Austrian inventor of the gas mantle.[br]Welsbach studied at Vienna Polytechnic and then at Heidelberg under the distinguished German chemist Bunsen. He carried out research into the rare earth elements and in 1885 succeeded in separating didymium into two earths, neodymium and praesodymium. He observed that asbestos fibres impregnated with rare earths, when strongly heated, gave off a bright light. This was the basis for his invention of the incandescent gas mande, which he patented in 1885. He found that a mixture of 99 per cent thoria and 1 per cent ceria produced the best light. The invention was well timed, for during the 1880s gas light was being challenged by the new electric light and the Welsbach mande gave gas light a new lease of life. It was in wide use by 1900, and in that year it was further improved by the introduction of the inverted mande burner which had a higher light efficiency and better light distribution. For industrial and street lighting, Welsbach and Lucas achieved still higher efficiencies using the regenerative principle. Welsbach sought a use for the ceria waste from the lamps and formed an alloy of 35–40 per cent ceria with iron, known as Auer metal. This material is in wide use as the flint in cigarette and gas lighters.[br]BibliographyArticles in J. Chem. 18 Sendzimir, Tadeusz
SUBJECT AREA: Metallurgy[br]fl. twentieth century USA[br]American metallurgist, inventor of the planetary rolling mill.[br]The principle of the Sendzimir or planetary rolling mill was first conceived by an English engineer named Picken, but that did not lead to practical development. The principle was taken up independently in the USA by Sendzimir, who put forward his own ideas in 1948 and obtained a patent the same year. By 1952 he had reached agreements with Picken and other workers to license the construction of a plant completely under the control of Sendzimir and his associates. This type of rolling mill was developed primarily for the cold rolling of steel strip. Cold rolling requires higher pressures to be exerted by the rolls, which therefore must be harder than in hot rolling. In the Sendzimir mill the two hard work rolls are backed up by a cluster of heavier rolls of various sizes to prevent distortion of the work rolls. One advantage of this arrangement is that the work rolls can be quite small, so that they can be removed by hand when they need replacement. The Sendzimir mill is in wide use, particularly for rolling stainless steel. The first such mill was installed at Peugeot's in France in 1950, with two sets of planetary rolls for the hot rolling of 16 in. (41 cm) wide steel strip. The second was in the USA in 1951, and a third, larger one followed at Ductile Steels Ltd at Willenhall, Wolverhampton, England, in 1953.[br]Further ReadingE.C.Larke, 1957, The Rolling of Strip, Sheet and Plate, London: Chapman \& Hall, pp. 53 ff. (gives some details of planetary mills, with a little historical background).LRD -

20 Boxer, Major-General Edward Mourrier
SUBJECT AREA: Weapons and armour[br]b. February 1822d. 11 January 1897 Isle of Wight, England[br]English Ammunition designer and inventor of the brass, fully obturating cartridge case.[br]Commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1839, Boxer's flair for the technical aspects of gunnery led to his appointment, at the early age of 33, as Superintendent of the Laboratory at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. He was able to devote his attention to the design of more effective shells, cartridges and fuses, with his greatest achievement being the invention, in 1866, of the Boxer cartridge, which had a case made of brass and a percussion cap set into the base. The real significance of the cartridge was that for the first time the chamber could be fully sealed, by way of the propellant gases expanding the case against the chamber wall, with the result that effective weapon range and accuracy could be dramatically increased. His achievement was recognized when Parliament voted a special financial grant, and the Boxer cartridge is still in wide use today. Boxer was promoted Colonel in 1868 and retired the following year as an honorary Major-General.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFRS 1858.Bibliography1855, Treatise on Artillery.
